Helen Sponsler age 97, of Anna, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Integrity Health Care in Anna. She was born on October 13, 1926 in Cairo, IL. The daughter of Scott & Mildred Kesler. She is survived by brother Jack Kesler of Dongola.
She is preceded in death by husband Wright Burge they have 2 children Scotty (Vickie) Burge of Cobden & Brenda Day of Anna. Also, preceded in death by Husband Darrell Porterfield & Elmer “Bud” Sponsler and son in law, Richard Day.
Helen had three grandchildren, Jamia (Chris) Pace, Nashville, TN. Justin (Steve Huey) Day of Marion, IL & Christy (Chris) Norton Cookeville, TN. Two Great grandchildren Austin (Sabrina) Norton. Franklin, TN and Alexa (Jose & Chase) Barrientos of Simi Valley, CA. 3 Great, great grandchildren Ellie, Evelyn, and Eliza Norton of Franklin, TN.
In her younger years Helen worked at Murphy's & Florsheim Shoe Factory in Anna & later retired from Anna Jr. High School as the head cook in the lunchroom. She always loved and talked about the kids who helped her serve & set the cafeteria for lunch every day; as many kids will still remember to this day. How good the food was she made!
Helen was a member of the United Methodist church in Anna. She served as the Worthy Matron for the Eastern Star, and was a lifelong member of the Anna VFW - Carroll P Foster Post 3455 Ladies Auxiliary where she served in many roles through the years. She enjoyed so much helping and cooking at the VFW Post for many hometown events for our Veterans.
Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family, cooking, & hanging out with her favorite granddaughter Jamia. She loved to travel with friends & play the slots from time to time. Her zest for life & laughter. will always remind her family & friends why she was just the best to be around. She made life fun & enjoyed every minute. We will all miss her terribly and will see her again someday.
Graveside funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2024 at Christian Chapel Cemetery in Dongola with Pastor Tim Gossett officiating. Interment will immediately follow. Those attending are asked to go directly to the cemetery.
